Chapter Thirty-Seven

Thoroughly exhausted, Charity clung to Brandon’s large hand, thankful for his support as they made their way down the street. The usually sleepy town of Y Knot still buzzed with after-party excitement. A half hour ago, the Twilight Singers packed up their instruments, and people began gathering their blankets and chairs, saying goodbyes or draining flasks. Amid chatter and laughter, partygoers returned to their homes. Before the party, the plan was her relatives were to pack their belongings and put them in the ranch buckboard in anticipation of their move to the homestead at the Heart of the Mountains. Except for her female cousins and Miss Wendy Knutson, who were staying at the Klinkner mill, everyone was moving into the main ranch house tonight to be closer to her mother and father.

“You wish you were going out to the ranch, as well?” Brandon asked quietly. His bootheels clomped the boardwalk, and laughter came from down the street. “I think you’ve been contemplating being left out for the last few days. I don’t mind if you want to go stay with Rachel or Faith. Any of your brothers’ll be happy to have you. With your girl cousins staying in town, your bedroom is available. If you want me to, I’ll go, too. Justin can watch things in town.”

She hugged his arm, loving Brandon all the more. Her husband became more considerate of her feelings as the years went on. “You know me so well,” she replied, feeling grateful. “I have been thinking about that. But no, I’m not leaving you. I can ride out early and stay late. I like our calm sanctuary to return to after all the excitement. It feels like heaven on earth.”

“Are you saying I’m not exciting?” He stopped and pulled her close, smiling down into her face.

She never knew what he was going to do next. They were in front of the mercantile, and Mr. Lichtenstein and Mr. Simpson had just disappeared inside only a few moments before. The golden glow emanating from the plate glass window as they approached winked out.

He was waiting.

“You already know my answer to such a silly question,” she purred. “Even after being married for so long, I still count the moments until we’re alone, Brandon. You’re the mystery.”

“So long? That’s another statement I take umbrage with.”

She laughed. Conversation was one thing, besides the obvious, that they never ran out of. He could arouse her anticipation with a cleverly placed phrase. He possessed a wicked ability to spin a double entendre, at least when they were alone. “You know I didn’t mean, so long, as in boring. I’m fine staying in town, even with everyone else out at the ranch. I won’t miss a thing.”

Chance and Evie called out a goodnight as they jangled past in a buggy, followed by another driven by Roady with Sally and the baby by his side.

Morgan Standford and June Pittman walked along the opposite side of the street, arm-in-arm. Morgan gave a head nod but nothing more.
